Abstract. Bess beetles are sapro-xillophagous insects that inhabit decaying logs. They display sub-social behavior and acoustic communication. Adults produce sounds with an
abdomino-alary stridulatory system. The sixth abdominal tergum has lateral
protuberances with spines ( pars stridens ) whereas the hind wings have spines in the
radial cell ( plectrum ). The potential taxonomic utility of these spines has not been
studied. We evaluated variation of spines in the plectrum of adult females sampling
four species of Proculini using traditional and geometric morphometric methods. We
divided the plectrum into five zones to compare the density, size and shape of spines
among zones and among species comparing each zone separately. Spine shape and
size were quantified with 2D cartesian coordinates and four measurements from SEM
micrographs. Separate univariate and multivariate analyses of variance revealed that
the size, density and shape of spines is different among zones in each of the four
species. Also, spine shape and size in all zones is different among species, which
would imply that plectrum spines might have taxonomic utility. Additionally, disparity
analyses showed that the peripheral zones have a higher variability, and the disparity
values in the middle and apex zones are higher in the two species with a wide
distribution range.

Abstract
Sagittal otoliths have been deemed as an appropriate structure to distinguish teleostean fishes.  However, character variation in size and shape of the sulcusacusticushas not been tested among Gerreidae Günther, 1859 species. For the first time, this paper explores the size and shape variation in the sulcus acusticususing landmark data and geometric morphometric methods. Our findings show that variation in the sulcusacusticussize, as estimated with centroid size, is not a useful feature to distinguish neither the five genera nor all species in this study. However, since analyses of variance followed by Tukey a posterioritests detect differences among groups of species, it is possible that the size of the sulcus acusticuswill still be useful as a phylogenetic character. In contrast, the pattern of variation in the shape of the sulcusacusticusconsists of well-defined character states exclusive of each of the 18 species of Gerreidae included. All comparisons in multivariate analyses of variance of semi-landmark configurations with a CVA were statistically significant, and the rates forcorrect posterior classifications were all above 79%. Discriminant axes allowed to locate variation in particular regions of the sulcus acusticusoutline that contribute most to the distinction among genera. Results revealed species in the same genus share a particular shape in the ostium and posterior extension of the cauda. Variation in the shape of the sulcusacusticusis, therefore, a very useful character to identify species in Gerreidae.

Abstract
Beekeeping with honey bees (Apis mellifera) is important in tropical regions but only scant information is available on the possible consequences of global warming for tropical beekeeping. We evaluated the effect of heat stress on developmental stability, the age at the onset of foraging (AOF) and longevity in Africanized honey bees (AHBs) in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, one of the main honey producing areas in the Neotropics where high temperatures occur in the spring and summer. We assessed the outcome of high stress temperatures on worker pupae of AHBs reared under a fluctuating temperature regime, emulating current tropical heat waves. This treatment involved a maximum fluctuating regime with the highest temperature peak of 40°C for 1 hour daily during six days. We compared treated pupae with control pupae reared at stable temperatures of 34-35.5°C. We estimated the influence of heat stress on development by analyzing fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in the size (n = 77) and shape of individuals (n = 118) and also the age at onset of foraging (AOF; n = 840) and total lifespan (n = 2443), traits that may affect the fitness of the colony. Our results showed that temperature regimes similar to those currently experienced by AHBs under field conditions did not affect overall body size except forewing length. However, bees that were reared under heat stress showed significant levels of FA in the shape of the forewing. High stress temperatures also decreased AOF and total lifespan. Our results show that changes occur in the phenotype and behavior of honey bees under heat stress. We discuss the effects and potential tolerance of AHBs to stressful temperatures.

Phylogenetic Position and Nucleotide Diversity of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vanillae worldwide based on Translation Elongation Factor 1α sequences. PLANT PATHOLOGY. doi: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ppa.12847/full
Abstract. Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vanillae is considered the most important fungus affecting vanilla crops around the world. This pathogen causes rot on vanilla roots and stems decreasing productive potentiality. This disease has been reported in the main producer´s regions in Madagascar, Indonesia, Reunion Island and Mexico. Previous studies showed that the ability to infect vanilla plants is a polyphyletic trait among strains of Fusarium oxysporum Species Complex (FOSC). The aim of this work is to test the hypothesis of the monophyletic origin of a wider sample of strains of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vanillae infecting Mexican vanilla and estimate nucleotide diversity of pathogen strains from the main vanilla producer countries. We assembled sequence data of Translation Elongation Factor (TEF) 1a gene from 106 strains, among which 4 are out-groups, 57 are exemplars to represent diversity within Fusarium oxysporum, 29 are previously available sequences from strains with the ability to infect vanilla worldwide, and 16 are new sequences from samples of Mexican Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vanillae. Nucleotide variation in sequences from Mexico, Africa and Asia was examined for within and among population genetic diversity of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vanillae based on indexes of nucleotide diversity. The strict consensus tree from parsimony phylogenetic analyses suggests that some Mexican strains of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vanillae belong in two well-supported clades, mixed with strains from Madagascar, Indonesia, Reunion Island and Comoros. The phylogenetic position of other Indonesian and Mexican strains is unresolved. Estimations of nucleotide diversity showed that the population from Mexico is most genetically diverse than the other three populations from Madagascar, Indonesia, and Reunion Island. Our results support a polyphyletic origin of vanilla infecting strains of F. oxysporum worldwide, and also reject the proposition that Mexican strains have a single origin. The phylogenetic optimizations over the strict consensus tree of the ability to infect vanilla plants suggest that pathogenetic strains around the world are the product of multiple shifts of pathogenesis and dispersion events.

ABSTRACT. In this paper, we present research carried out in the Morphometric Laboratory, Institute of Ecology, in Xalapa, Veracruz, México, which consisted of creating a new method that links geometric morphometrics techniques and descriptive geometry. In our new method a collection of five photographs was used to tag each morphological point called “Landmarks” that defines the numerical values of the coordinates “x” and “y” in a Cartesian space to generate through the coordinates “x,” “y” and “z” the geometry of the biological form of a beetle, across surfaces, meshes and solids. In this research we worked with the beetle Deltochilum Lobipes that belong to the Scarabaeidae family. We made two prototypes in 3D printed, from the 2D coordinates of morphological points which were obtained through the tpsDig2 program. This research documents evidence that supports the hypothesis of our project: “the quantitative descriptor of shape and size in 2D, contribute in the modeling of complex geometric structures in 3D”.
